Psychiatry and psychopathology are uniquely based both in natural sciences and humanities. Due to the rapid development of the neurosciences and due to the advances in psychopharmacology as well as standardised psychotherapy, however, this unique feature is less and less recognised. Nevertheless, for the daily clinical practice supporting patients, it is crucial to understand the ethical, epistemological and anthropological background of psychiatry. Therefore, this seminar will focus on urgent questions in clinical work which cannot be addressed by empirical means (i.e. scientific experiments): e.g. “What are psychiatric disorders and do they really exist?”, “How is the human being conceptualised in psychiatry?“, ”What role play socio-cultural factors and what about universalism in psychiatry?”, “Can coercive measures be ethically justified?“, “Is there such a thing as rational suicide?“ |
