The Civil War in Spain from 1936 to 1939 was an inherently transnational conflict. Arguably one of the most important events of European interwar history, the conflict between rebelling self-stylized nationalist forces and the Spanish republican government and its supporters shaped European history in the twentieth century sustainably. This course will analyze the social and political causes of the war, its course and ramifications as well as the war’s international consequences in a European and global context. A transnational focus on ideologies like anarchism, communism, fascism, monarchism and Catholicism will be combined with a focus on cultural and social histories of the war. The course language will be English and the ability to read and discuss in English is important. If you have never taken a course in English, this is a good opportunity to start doing so and engage with a truly crucial moment in European history.
