In this course, we will discuss populism in Europe and the Americas.
First, we will explore categories and concepts of populism, such as inclusionary versus exclusionary populism, populism as thin ideology, political strategy or performance, left and right wing populism, populism as a form of protest and populism in power. Second, we will discuss historical and actual populist parties, movements and politicians in Europe and the Americas, such as Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Mexico, Peronism in Argentina, Bolsonaro in Brazil, Trump (and others) in the USA, the RN in France, Podemos and Vox in Spain, 5 Stelle and La Lega in Italy, FIDESZ in Hungary, PIS in Poland, etc., according to the wishes of participating students.
By the end of this class, students should be able to provide logical and well-informed opinions on questions such as: What explains populism cross-nationally and cross-regionally? What types of populisms exist and how do they differ from each other? What happens when populists are in power? |
