‘We make meaning in a variety of ways’
This course serves as an introduction to the fascinating world of multimodal research, uncovering the intricate ways in which people communicate. Multimodality emphasizes the co-occurrence and interplay of "different semiotic resources", such as speech, writing, gesture, and images, in the production of meaning. It challenges the traditional division of labor among disciplines focused on specific means of meaning making, highlighting the need to study how different semiotic resources are combined to create integrated multimodal wholes. This recognition became even more significant with the advent of digital technologies, enabling the combination of previously separate means of making meaning.
By taking stock of two decades of theorizing and research, this course offers a comprehensive overview of multimodality as a rapidly growing academic field. We explore three distinct traditions in which multimodality has been studied: systemic functional linguistics, social semiotics, and conversation analysis. You will gain insights into the history, key concepts, and methods of each tradition, while also discovering their synergies and differences. We highlight seminal studies and critiques, as well as examine how these approaches have been transformed through integration with other research traditions. |
