This class will look at texts that use experimental journalism to address and comment on social and political issues. We will read Upton Sinclair’s major novel The Jungle that – published in 1905/1906 – sharply criticized exploitation and corruption, causing not only a scandal but also the introduction of laws to help workers. We will also read Still Life (1984), a documentary play by Emily Mann, whose theater is based on interviews and research, and often works in a commemorative way. While the field of poetry is particularly rich in the genre of documentary poetry and we will encounter many examples (from Muriel Rukeyser to NourbeSe Philip), our focus will be the book A Thousand Times You Lose Your Treasure by Hoa Nguyen about her mother who was a stunt motorcyclist in a circus.
