How do people use language and what do they use it for? These questions are central to sociolinguistics and this class will provide some of the answers. In addition to considering different topics and research areas in sociolinguistics, such as language and gender, multilingualism and language contact, you will be introduced to methods for collecting and analysing sociolinguistic data, such as interviewing and linguistic landscaping. Towards the end of the semester, you will carry out a small-scale research project in which you collect and analyse your own data on a research question of your choice and present your findings in the form of a poster at our own mini-conference. |
