Nearly two million people live currently behind bars in the United States. The prison-industrial complex has long been criticized to very little avail. This class looks at the culture of punishment in America reading texts from sociologists and political scientists, as well as memoirs and other texts written by people currently incarcerated, in order to understand the complexity of the issue.
While most of the material will be available on Stud.IP, we will spend a considerable amount of time critically reading and discussing Ted Conover’s journalistic book about his experiences as a prison guard and Michael Morton’s memoir of the time he spent innocently in prison. Therefore, please purchase and read:
- Ted Conover, Guarding Sing Sing (Random House, 2000)
- Michael Morton, Getting Life (Simon and Schuster, 2014)
