From the Salem Witch Trials, to Wicked, novels, or children’s stories: Witches have long been a fixture in our cultural imagination. In this Proseminar, we will explore the rich history of witches and witchcraft in the United States and (Western) Europe, with the goal of developing a trans-historical understanding of the cultural image and construct of the witch. We are going to examine different trials, myths, and representations of witches throughout history and in various different kinds of media (some of which may include: TV, film, books, or music). Overall, this course is designed to develop your practical skills in analysing cultural subjects. There will be a place for everyone who is interested.
