The advent of the modern nation-state and the influence of the mass media have introduced immensely powerful yet not fully explored mechanisms for shaping the image of the 'Other'. But who is the 'Other', and how is this concept constructed? While initiatives towards 'global sustainability' in a shared world suggest a growing awareness of equality, pivotal political events such as Brexit and the Trump presidency have also intensified polarization and reinforced divisions between 'Them' and 'Us'. This seminar, drawing on a range of scholarly texts, examines how Otherness is constructed in literature, media, and politics, with a particular focus on the role of education. By providing an introductory exploration of this concept, the seminar aims to foster a deeper understanding of shifting cultural boundaries in contemporary Anglo-American contexts, offering a platform for critical analysis and discussion.
