Places shape language use. We speak quietly in some places, but loudly in others. We use formal language in some places, but informal language in others. People from different places use different varieties of the same language. Language also shapes places. We make locations meaningful through repeated actions, negotiating meaning with others through language. In this seminar, we will explore some of these connections between language and place, from dialects and regional varieties to the use of metaphors and naming as acts of place-making. |
