How do people learn a second, or a third, or a fourth language? This course will explore this fundamental and exciting question from a variety of angles by examining the key theories and existing practices from the field of SLA research, encompassing not only linguistics, but also psychology, sociology, and education. We will consider a number of factors relevant to the process of language acquisition, including age, gender, motivation and the role of the native language. We will also discuss how the various approaches in SLA can be fruitfully implemented in language teaching contexts. For instance, we will make use of learner corpora to analyse different types of L2 learner data, relating these data to the predictions of L2 acquisition theories and identifing possible causes of learner errors. The primary focus will be on English as a second language, although other languages will also be addressed. The seminar will comprise a variety of activities, including presentations, group discussions, the creation of a glossary of key terminology, peer teaching and will culminate in a project work. Please note: A substantial amount of reading will be required. |
