Political groups routinely publish texts and media that broadcast their messaging and document their work. These productions inevitably shape the culture of the location and time in which they are received. This seminar examines political writing as a practice that has cultural effects in processes of both its production and reception. Drawing on the theories of Paulo Freire, Audre Lorde, bell hooks and Jo Freeman, we will examine different examples of press releases, political analyses and journals that have been published by political groups and movements. The time frame spans both historical and contemporary sources. There will be an added emphasis on understanding how these writings facilitate or obstruct the construction of political memory; that is, how do they manage to effectively transmit their learnings and defeats to the next generation of activists and organisers. This course will be of interest to students who are involved in political activity, want to learn how to politicise cultural analysis, are invested in producing sharp analyses of contemporary political events or want to learn how to adapt grassroots activism to a classroom context. |
