This course focuses on academic writing as a distinct form of discourse with its own structures and style. To gain a better understanding of its characteristics, we will read selections from a variety of academic texts that exemplify typical features of academic prose. Based on these readings, we will discuss the elements of good academic prose and work towards incorporating them into our own writing. Particular attention will be paid to elements of prose style that students have not yet had the opportunity to perfect, such as appositions, modifiers, parallelism and effective punctuation. In addition to questions of structure and style, we will examine writing and research strategies in detail, as well as how to use references and create an effective outline. |
