This course will equip you with the tools and concepts needed to critically analyse children’s and young adult literature from a literary studies perspective. In the first part, you will become acquainted with important terminology and concepts of literary studies, which will help you focus less on what is said and more on how it is represented. We will read Jason Reynolds's young adult novel Twenty-Four Second From Now and practise analysing narrative texts with regard to narrative perspective, character representation, plot and setting.
In the second part, we will read and analyse a variety of picturebooks and reflect how these texts construct or challenge a perceived norm. With the help of secondary literature, we will discuss fictional representations of family models, illness and disabilities, as well as stereotypes, authenticity, and categories such as ‘race’, class, and gender.
