“Indigeneity”, being native, has recently become a central category of ethnic studies. It has been closely connected with the postcolonial condition, that is, with the situation of the colonized peoples in, for example, former British colonies such as Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. We will start with a general conceptual framework and a brief historical overview but will soon read and discuss theories and methods for the analysis of Indigenous texts by us as non-Indigenous scholars. Then we will apply theories and methods in the study of texts by Indigenous people, especially in the Canadian context. The text samples will be drawn from contemporary Indigenous life writing, documentaries, feature films, and digital sources. Texts and other sources will be provided through StudIP. |
