This seminar, held via ZOOM, explores the imperial biography of Mahathma Gandhi, lawyer, anti-colonial activist, Indian politician, writer and advocate of nonviolence policies. We will focus on three stages in his life which overlap with the imperial map of the British Empire: London, South Africa and India. When studying law in London between 1887 and 1891, Gandhi, as a colonized Indian subject, was confronted with a cultural and political environment representing the heyday of British imperialism worldwide. When practising law in South Africa between 1893 and 1915, he first parted with the well-off Indian bourgeoisie, and only later mobilized the larger Indian worker diaspora in colony-wide strikes for better pay and working conditions. The course finally turns to selected conflicts of Gandhi with the colonial government between 1915 and 1948 and shows how his policies of symbolism and non-violence worked and where their limits were. The seminar is part of “Digital Outgoing“, a new project starting at the Historical Institute Rostock in 2021. We will probably have two experts on Gandhi from the UK or from India, joining us for 2 or 3 sessions to help us understand Gandhi’s political and cultural impact. A decent ability to read and communicate in English is necessary, but the seminar explicitly aims at helping you develop and improve these very skills.
