The Black Lives Matter Movement is only the most recent one in a long history of resistance and revolts concerning the living conditions of black people in the United States. In this class, we will look at the history of black political movements. We will begin by examining slave revolts (and their cultural representation) and the abolitionists of the nineteenth century. We will then look at cultural movements of the early twentieth century, such as the Harlem Renaissance, and then focus on the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1950s and 1960s. Furthermore, we will look at movements that have been created in response to other movements such as black feminism, which was a response to white middle-class issues discussed within feminist circles.
