In this class, we will encounter a great variety of American poets – Black poets, Asian-American poets, Chicanx poets, indigenous poets, queer poets, city poets and desert poets—and their work that shows you the fantastic possibilities of this form of literature. From poetry that operates mainly with lines and pictures (giovanni singleton) to the narrative poetry of Anne Carson, the prose poems of Kathryn Mockler, the vivid imagery of Ocean Vuoung, and the experimental works of Shesshu Foster and Douglas Kearney, we will encounter voices and issues particularly from the margins of society that acquire new power in the words of the poets. All participants of this class need to purchase and read:
Anne Carson, Autobiography of Red. New York: Vintage, 1998. |
