Abstract

The increasing demand for pork resulted in larger litter sizes with more low birth weight (LBW) piglets. Piglets with LBW showed retarded body growth, reflected by skeletal muscle development. It was hypothesized that amino acid supplementation can ameliorate the delayed muscle development of LBW piglets. This thesis aimed at clarifying the birth weight (BiW) differences in early postnatal muscle development and under the influence of glutamine (Gln) supplementation.
