In America’s founding document, th declaration of independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Can this be true, for everyone of whatever race and for women too? Is it possible for the US – or any nation – to be ruled by reason and choice? For Lepore, these are the essential questions, which she raises – and answers - in her new history of the United States of America. In this class we will read parts of her best-selling book together and try to come to terms with the history of a nation devoted to realize “these truths” while simultaneously denying to so many the freedom which is the cornerstone of its founding. A reasonably good command of the English language is a prerequisite for this class, which aims to help students to improve their spoken and written language skills.
