This course will cover all aspects of stem cell biology from self-renewal through to clinical applications. The students will acquire profound knowledge on the basics of cell and tissue differentiation during the embryonic development with focus on the nervous system including methodical approaches such as stem cell culturing in monolayer, neurosphere and 3-dimensional matrix cultures, in vivo molecular imaging, gene and protein microarray analysis, loss-of-function (gene knock-down) and gain-of-function (gene knock-in) as well as stem cell transplantation experiments.
The students will be able after completion of the module:
(1) know the general mechanisms of stem cell development,
(2) to know specific pathways involved in the differentiation of diverse neuronal and cardiovascular cell lines,
(3) to choose appropriate scientific tools and methods to analyse the underlying cellular processes
(4) understand the clinical impact of stem cell research results for regenerative medicine.
(5) to prepare and give a scientific presentation based on an up to date publication |
