The English language has spread across as the globe – both as a result of British (and US-American) (neo-)colonialism and the current dynamics of globalization, which can be seen today in the different types of English and contact varieties all over the world. This seminar explores the diversity of English from a linguistic, historical, political and socio-cultural perspective. Starting with key concepts of language contact and change and approaches to modelling World Englishes, we will then analyse different varieties of English around the world, using corpora, films/TV series, YouTube videos, songs, novels or social media. These include ‘native’ varieties such as Australian English(es), English as a Second Language like Indian English(es) as well as pidgins and creoles as, for example, Nigerian Pidgin. |
